I Fight
The noise is building. It is early. The lights are on. The crowd is on their feet. The fight is coming.
In a few moments, the bell will ring and the fight will begin. My opponent will roar across the cage with the rising sun and begin throwing punches and kicks in attempts to knock me out. The stillness of the dawn will be exchanged for the noise of the fight. The calm of solitude will be replaced by the jeers of the crowd. The refuge of the training camp will be invaded by the danger of the world.
For the next twelve rounds, I will be trading punches with the enemy. It is now that I must make a choice. Will I stand my ground and fight or will I give my back to the enemy and tap out. Because of Calvary, I am free to fight from victory. However, I must still fight. And so I choose to fight.
I fight for love…
I will knock out hatred; I will counterpunch bitterness with grace. I fight for love. This round I will stand in the center of the cage with love. I will love my opponent as God loves me.
I fight for Joy…
I will get back to my feet after being knocked down by circumstance. I will not tap out to temptation or throw cynical punches… the technique of the weak fighter. I will refuse to see my opponents as anything less than human beings, created by God that the enemy is using to fight through. I will refuse to see the elbows of adversity as anything less than an opportunity to see God.
I fight for inner peace…
I will fight as one who is forgiven. I will forgive those who punch me with their harsh words and kick me with their accusations. I will answer the bell with peace so that my hand will be raised for eternity.
I fight with patience…
I will resist the takedowns of inconvenience. Instead of mentally punching those who insult me, I will circle the cage and give them grace. Rather than complain that the round is too long, I will thank God while on the mat. Instead of tapping out to challenges, I will face them as a champion in Christ.
I fight with kindness…
I will be kind to those who have been knocked down, as they feel alone. Kind to those who have won the round, as they are afraid of what lies ahead. I will be kind to those who ignore me, for such is how God has treated me before I join his team.
I fight with goodness…
I will be knocked down by honesty before winning with deceit. I will keep silent in victory before I will boast. I will not throw accusation punches when I am hurt. I will fight with goodness.
I fight with faithfulness…
This round I will keep the promises made in my corner. My training partners will not regret their trust. My actions will validate my words. My family will rest in my love. And my children will never fear that their champion will not answer the bell.
I fight with gentleness…
I choose to counter punch rude comments with gentle responses. If I raise my voice while on my back during the fight may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself.
I fight to stay under-control…
I am a child of God… My championship is in Christ. I refuse to let physical issues tap out eternal rewards. I am under control. Alcohol or drugs will not knock me out. I will fight by faith and not by sight. I will listen for the voice from my heavenly trainer. I fight under-control.
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To these I bring to the fight. If I survive, I will give thanks. If I am knocked down, I will get back up through his grace. And then, when this fight is done, I will enter into his rest.
Remember, it is called a fight for a reason. However, we fight from victory, not for victory. Keep Fighting!
