Sambo

Sambo (also spelled sombo) is a modern Russian combative art that emphasizes throws, takedowns and joint locks. Some claim it was heavily influenced by the Armenian art of khok; others say it was derived from indigenous folk wrestling and judo.

Two variations of the art are currently taught: sport sambo, which includes mostly grappling techniques (but not choking); and combat sambo, which encompasses grappling and striking. Practitioners wear a unique uniform (called a kurtka), which is frequently used for grabbing and throwing.
